Maarja Pabunen was born in 1992 in Viljandi, Estonia. Mainly self educated in arts, literature and history. 
In 2013 she started studies in Estonian Academy of Arts, (Scenography BA). In addition she has also taken courses from the Institute of Art History and Visual Culture and participated in a student exchange program in Paris (École Boulle).
Her professional career as a theatre designer started in 2015 when a small theatre association Misanzen was created. With the director Helen Rekkor their main focus has been on visual performances. In addition to site specific performances with Misanzen Maarja Pabunens theatrical works have been performed in Tallinn Seaplane Harbor, Vaba Lava theatre centre,
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Rakvere Theatre, Karlova Theatre, Kuressare City Theatre, Nokia Concert Hall, Must Kast Theatre.
